Claire forgot to breathe.
“That woman is Rebecca?”
“Yes.”
Claire stared at him.
“Then who died in the accident?”
Michael looked toward the house, where Ethan was sleeping.
“We don’t know yet.”
He placed several documents on the table.
“But we found something worse.”
Claire waited.
“Rebecca was having an affair with your husband before the accident.”
Claire felt as though the ground had disappeared beneath her.
Michael continued.
“And there’s something else.”
“What?”
“Your condo has already been sold.”
Claire stared at him.
“What did you say?”
“They used your personal documents, a forged driver’s license, and someone inside the title office helped push the transaction through. The sale closed, and the money was deposited into an account.”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
Michael slid another document toward her.
“But Daniel isn’t getting that money either.”
“Why not?”
Michael looked directly at her.
“Because Rebecca transferred almost all of it into an account Daniel can’t access.”
That was when Claire understood.
The woman who had tried to steal her identity was betraying the man who had helped her do it.
But there were still questions they couldn’t answer.
Why had Rebecca faked her death?
Who had actually died in the car?
And what did Daniel have to do with the crash?
The truth would turn out to be far worse than either of them imagined.
PART 3
Michael didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did Claire.
After Ethan went to bed, they sat at the kitchen table going through documents while Michael’s investigator continued sending new information.
Little by little, the pieces began falling into place.
Two years earlier, Rebecca and Daniel had been lovers.
At the time, Daniel worked as Michael’s private driver.
In fact, Claire had met Daniel during that same period.
One stormy evening, he had offered her a ride home.
While Claire slowly fell in love with him, Daniel was secretly sleeping with Rebecca.
“I found out about the affair shortly before the accident,” Michael admitted. “I was going to divorce her.”
“Did Daniel know you had discovered them?”
“Yes.”
Michael looked away.
“I fired him a week before the crash.”
Then he pulled out a mechanical inspection report.
After the accident, Michael had hired an independent expert to examine the vehicle.
The brakes had been deliberately tampered with.
“The official investigation called it an accident,” Michael explained. “Ethan was badly traumatized. The vehicle caught fire, and they found human remains inside. I was barely functioning. I didn’t push hard enough for another investigation.”
“And Rebecca?”
“Everyone believed the body was hers.”
Ethan had been found several yards away from the wreckage.
Somehow, he survived.
But the trauma left him nearly silent for two years.
Now Michael believed something very different had happened.
Rebecca had planned to leave Michael for Daniel.
She intended to take Ethan with her and later use the boy as leverage to demand money.
But Daniel had never truly planned to run away with Rebecca.
He had tampered with the brakes because he expected Rebecca to die in the crash.
Rebecca survived.
And rather than reveal herself, she used the accident to disappear.
“Then who was in the car?” Claire asked.
Michael’s expression hardened.
“Most likely a woman Rebecca picked up somewhere along the road. We’ve asked investigators to reopen the case and conduct new DNA testing.”
Claire felt nauseated.
“So my husband tried to kill his mistress… then married me… and eventually she came back.”
“She came back because she wanted revenge,” Michael said. “And you happened to be the perfect weapon.”
The private investigator had uncovered payments to a cosmetic surgery clinic several months after the crash.
Rebecca had changed several features of her face, although not enough to make herself completely unrecognizable.
Years later, when she located Daniel, she approached him using a different name.
Daniel didn’t recognize her.
Then Rebecca discovered that Claire owned an expensive condo in Lincoln Park that she had inherited from her great-aunt.
She also learned that Claire and Daniel’s marriage had grown increasingly distant.
That was when Rebecca formed the idea.
“She studied you for months,” Michael explained. “Your social media. Your photographs. Your clothes. Your hair. Your makeup. Even the way you carried yourself.”
Claire listened silently.
“She approached Daniel as another woman,” Michael continued. “She made him fall for her, then convinced him she looked enough like you to impersonate you during certain transactions.”
Claire’s voice broke.
“And he was willing to kill me for a condo?”
Michael said nothing.
There was nothing he could say.
The following morning, two men arrived at the gated community claiming to be police officers.
They asked for Claire Bennett.
According to them, Linda had reported that Claire had stolen jewelry worth more than fifteen thousand dollars.
Michael asked to see a warrant.
They had none.
He immediately contacted his attorney, who confirmed that Linda had indeed filed a complaint, but there was no warrant authorizing anyone to search Michael’s property or arrest Claire there.
The men left as soon as Michael began photographing their badges and identification.
“They know I’m here,” Claire whispered.
Michael turned toward her.
“Who did you give your full name to?”
Claire suddenly remembered the guard at the entrance.
When she had started working there, he had taken down her personal information for the security records.
Michael clenched his jaw.
“Linda is paying people for information.”
That changed everything.
Hiding was no longer enough.
Michael’s attorney filed formal complaints involving identity theft, fraud, forgery, and threats. He also began legal proceedings challenging the condo sale and requested that the proceeds from the transaction be temporarily frozen.
While those motions were moving forward, something happened none of them had expected.
Jessica, one of Claire’s former coworkers who now worked in emergency medicine, managed to contact her through Michael’s phone.
“You need to come to the hospital,” Jessica said. “Daniel is here.”
Claire went cold.
“What happened?”
“He overdosed on sedatives. Somebody brought him in last night. He was barely conscious.”
“Who brought him?”
Jessica went silent.
Then she answered.
“A woman using your driver’s license. She told everyone she was Claire Bennett.”
Michael immediately looked at Claire.
Jessica continued.
“There’s something else. She kept asking whether Daniel was going to survive. Not normal questions. She was obsessed with whether he could die. Something felt wrong.”
Rebecca had decided her partner was no longer useful.
If Daniel died, she wouldn’t have to share any of the money.
Michael’s attorneys immediately accelerated their effort to freeze every account linked to the condo transaction.
That night, they succeeded in stopping most of the funds before they could be transferred overseas.
The following morning, Rebecca attempted to move the rest.
Nothing happened.
She couldn’t access a single dollar.
Rebecca lost control.
She stormed into Daniel’s hospital room while he was still connected to monitors.
“What did you do?!” she screamed. “Where is my money?!”
Daniel barely managed to open his eyes.
Then Jessica entered the room.
Behind her came Claire, Michael, two investigators, and an assistant district attorney.
Rebecca froze.
For several long seconds, the two women stared at each other.
Rebecca’s hair was styled almost exactly like Claire’s.
She was even wearing colors Claire frequently wore.
But standing only a few feet apart, nobody could have mistaken them.
“Identification,” one of the investigators said.
Rebecca handed him Claire’s stolen driver’s license.
He looked at the card.
Then at Claire.
Then back at Rebecca.
“We’re going to check your fingerprints.”
Rebecca gave him a mocking smile.
“How dramatic.”
But the confidence disappeared the moment her fingerprints were processed.
They did not belong to Claire Bennett.
They matched an old record belonging to Rebecca Grant.
A woman who had officially been declared dead two years earlier.
Daniel heard the name from his bed.
His eyes opened wide.
“Rebecca?”
She slowly turned toward him.
“Hello, sweetheart.”
Daniel’s face turned white.
“You’re dead.”
Rebecca smiled.
“That’s what you wanted, wasn’t it?”
Daniel began trembling.
Michael stepped closer.
One Comment on “I left the hospital earlier than expected, and upon arriving home unannounced, I saw a romantic table set for two. I thought my husband wanted to surprise me, so I hid to wait for him.”
